But first: EMARKETER x Spotter Creator Impact Report
10 Creator Fund myths debunked - A Creator Fund is basically a platform’s attempt to trick Creators into thinking there’s meaningful economic value inherent in creating and posting content on that platform. They’re inaccessible, opaque, and usually transient because they’re meant to last only long enough to incentivize Creators to join and increase content output - then they go away, leaving Creators high and dry. Anyway, DigiDay does a nice job outlining all the BS wrong with Creator Funds in this article. I’m not saying you shouldn’t join Creator Funds - their money is also green (or whatever color your country’s money is). Just keep in mind that unlike YouTube’s Partner Program, you can’t build a sustainable long-term business - even at scale - on a platform’s Creator Fund. It’s “found money” (the equivalent to money you find on the sidewalk) at best.
TikTok is offering a new “Specialized Rewards Program” - Speaking of Creator Funds, TikTok ironically announced this new program via @tiktokcreators on Instagram. The SRP program is currently invite-only and pays bonuses to Creators in the existing Creator Rewards Program for producing content in “some of the platform’s most valued content areas, including Film and TV, Auto, Learning, and Sports”. If you happen to already produce content in these categories and quality for the Creator Rewards Program, it’s probably worth jumping in on - but again, this won’t be a long-term thing so don’t pivot your business around it.
$1.3M raised by mid-size Creator in equity crowdfunding - Mr. Hand Pay, with 735,000 subscribers on YouTube, raised $1.3M on GigaStar, a revenue-share-based crowdfunding platform for Creators. Lots of companies have tried and failed at enabling Creators to raise funding from fans in exchange for a piece of future income. This success could represent a big step on the way to the model becoming an actual part of the Creator Economy paradigm.
Acast x Supercast vs Patreon x Sony Music & Wondery - Podcast ad networks used to be hyper-focused on ad sales. Some experimented with merch, but few focused on other types of monetization. That appears to be changing. Just this past week, we saw two big announcements where major podcast networks partnered with major subscription platforms. Supercast seems to be casting a wide net, as Acast is a tech-driven ad network with 135,000 podcasts signed. Meanwhile, Patreon is going for a smaller, larger subset as Sony Music has ~850 podcasts and Wondery has ~300 - but 55 Wondery shows have hit #1 on the charts.
Uscreen drops a bunch of updates - Uscreen's platform is hyper-focused on video content memberships, so if you are thinking about offering live and on-demand video content for a monthly subscription to your audience, they are worth checking out. They dropped a ton of updates, and some of the fun ones include Buy Now, Pay Later, Team Subscriptions, a Samsung TV app, and a simplified checkout process to increase conversions.
Email platforms aren’t generally known for their monetization tools; email, after all, is usually a mid-funnel tool to build trust while selling elsewhere.
beehiiv totally breaks this mold.
I launched Creator Logic on beehiiv two years ago, and since then I’ve used all their monetization tools including:
Premium ad network connecting you with brands like Netflix and Nike.
Easy subscription access to premium content
Paid cross-promotion of other newsletters via Boosts
If you’re having trouble making money from your email subscribers, make the switch - beehiiv makes it easy for newsletters to grow and monetize, and adds new features literally every week.
