Learn who your audience is
You don't need anyone's permission to collaborate with brands. You don't need to wait for them to come to you. You can use your own creativity and the data that you can glean from your audience and reach out to any freaking brand that you want.
What do you know about your audience? Have you ever surveyed them? Do you chat with them in the DMs, comments, or a community?
The dirty open secret about influencer marketing is that Creators and their content are secondary for the brand. It’s the audience that matters most. Brands don’t actually care how much you love their products, or how your content really aligns with their mission / aesthetic / vibe.
They care about whether your audience is likely to spend money with them.
If you don’t know or can’t articulate who your audience is, you’re going to have a tough time with everything from pitching dream partners to negotiating better rates.
So - start now. Survey them. Chat with them. Read your comments and get a sense of who they are.
That way, the next time you’re talking to a brand, you’ll be able to say “Surveys I’ve done show I have X% of the type of people who use your product in my audience”. Watch how much better that works than “I love your product so much!” to get them to write you a check.
Put that you’re a Creator on LinkedIn - even if you have a day job
LinkedIn is one of the absolute best places to understand the marketing hierarchy at some of these brands, and just going to be a much better way to target who's actually responsible for these decisions.
Brand marketers are professionals. Professionals hang out on LinkedIn. If you’re going to engage with brands and their marketers, that’s the place to do it.
The problem is, if your profile says nothing about your being a content Creator, they’re going to ignore your DM.
If your profile says you’re a content Creator but doesn’t have descriptions of your content, relevant metrics, or links to your socials - they might click to your page but they probably won’t respond. Too much effort.
You want to make the decision to partner with you effortless.
Meet the marketers where they are, and have all the info they will need to decide to engage with you right there on your profile.
You’ll increase your success rate forever with just a few minutes of effort now.
Go for the niche brands
At least in the beginning, it would be a better fit to reach out to Tier 2 and Tier 3-type brands who might be a good fit for your audience.
Justin did a great live mentoring session with one of our members, who is a comedian that spoofs characters from comics, fantasy, and science fiction. His audience is geeky Millennial and Gen X males who like Star Wars, The Avengers, Justice League, etc. - so of course, Marvel and DC were brands he wanted to reach out to.
Here’s the thing - everyone on the planet with a similar audience is reaching out to those two brands. Is it possible he could work with them? Of course! Are they actually low-hanging fruit? Absolutely not.
What other sorts of things might this audience be into? Perhaps
Maker Faire and other nerdy family events
Tabletop games and accessories
Indie PC and mobile games
These types of companies probably don’t have many Creators reaching out to them to work together - and they’d all benefit from great content that reaches the right audience to buy their products.
There might be some big, obvious categories and companies that appeal to your audience - but there’s a ton of money available if you steer clear of those and target the underserved niches that want your audience as well.
Even with the right tactics, brand partnerships is a perseverance game.
Some of them are going to work out, but a lot of brands are going to be like, “No thanks,” or they're not going to respond.
That lack of interest is not a commentary on you or the quality of your content.
It’s not “No,” it's “Not yet.”
If you can maintain that mindset when you're doing this type of outreach, just keep persevering and you'll break through.
It’s much easier to try new things, persevere, and achieve success when there’s a community to have your back!
