Cool and controversial
I used to write off AI video as “slop”…then on Saturday, I watched an AI-driven film that made me weep.
“Ancestra”, made by Eliza McNitt in partnership with Google DeepMind and Darren Aronofsky’s AI studio Primordial Soup, is about her birth story. She died in-utero from a hole in her heart, was born from an emergency c-section, and was brought back by the doctors in front of her mother.
It features a bunch of trippy visuals meant to evoke humanity’s tiny position in the grandness of Creation. Those were obviously AI-generated, but much better than the trippy “slop” we see on TikTok these days.
But that’s not what was interesting:
The newborn baby was AI-generated.
I've seen a newborn baby fresh out the womb, and it looked absolutely real - far better than the creepy dolls or older baby-actors that Hollywood films use. Though generating a realistic newborn required hands-on effort from the Google team, I hear tools that let Creators make characters as detailed as this are coming very soon.
This story would never get made without AI.
Most people have ideas for shows, movies, video games, books, and other creative projects that will never get made by “The System” because nobody will even give it a look.
When I was a lowly mail room clerk at William Morris Endeavor, if we received a general submission from someone we didn’t know, we threw it straight in the trash without even reading it. Every agency, studio, and production company does the same.
Gatekeepers only let in the people they want to let in.
AI tears down the gates.
Over the next few years, we will all gain low-cost access to tools that let us make our Hollywood-quality creative visions a reality…not just without a bunch of month, but also with just a few weeks of effort put in after work and on weekends.
Think about what iMovie and CapCut did for video creation.
AI is already doing that for all content, and the ceiling is 1000x higher.
This was a human story, made by humans.
Ancestra was a film made by humans and enabled by AI.
The filmmaker, actors, and crew were humans. The set was physical. The story was one that touches the deepest primal themes in all of us - life, death, love, and our place in the universe.
The use of AI didn't reduce that; if anything, it made it more impactful - but only because human beings chose where and how to use it.
The best stories will always require human guidance and vision.
I believe it will be a very long time before a machine is capable of making the infinite creative decisions to move people to tears.
Our ally in freedom
Across every industry, AI is making it possible for people to do more with less.
Yes, that applies to companies, and we are seeing the effects of that in layoffs and unemployment.
But it also applies to individuals, and we're seeing the effects of that in faster creative output and the rise of solo entrepreneurship.
I was initially angry about AI and all of the bad things that it is going to cause in society.
I know it will undoubtedly cause many bad things.
But I'm starting to turn the corner on the big picture.
For many Creators, our dream is to be free - financially free, creatively free, and emotionally free.
By giving us the ability to do more on our own, AI may be the most powerful ally we have in achieving our dreams.
